RELATED: The Flash: Pros And Cons Of Retconning The DCEU
In the DC Comics Universe, The Flash taps on the Speed Force to do phenomenal things when traveling really fast. This tampering caused multiverse-shaking events such as The Flashpoint, alongside crazy crises the superhero community has had to deal with. However, when utilized properly (and even creatively), The Flash can do more things with his speed than just doing things fast.
10 Speed Force Conduit, Doesn’t Matter Where
While Barry Allen’s iconic origin story involves his super-speed being a result of an experiment gone wrong, it’s soon specified that his superhuman speed comes from the Speed Force, one of the Seven Forces of the Universe. Aside from tapping into the cosmic force that governs motion itself, the Flash’s control over the Speed Force is so powerful that he’s actually able to harness its powers even in dimensions outside the main DC Universe.
This is evidenced with the Flash still being able to achieve superhuman speeds while fighting and/or teaming up with various groups from other franchises, such as the Masters of the Universe(in “DC Universe vs. The Masters of the Universe” in 2014), and the teenagers with an attitude called the Power Rangers (in “Justice League/Power Rangers” in 2017).
9 Friction Cushion For Protection
One critical question comics fans have when it comes to speedsters like the Flash involves non-speedsters - when Flash runs in superhuman speeds while rescuing people, wouldn’t the people rescued suffer the effects of G-Force and heavy impact? Apparently, this isn’t necessarily the case for the Flash and things he holds, courtesy of the Speed Force.
Thanks to what’s known as a friction cushion or a Speed Force “aura,” the Flash is constantly surrounded by an aura that naturally absorbs kinetic energy. This protects the Flash and anyone they’re touching or running with from the natural effects of superhuman speeds - such as heavy impact, airborne matter, and the like.
8 Superhuman Strength, Durability
As a speedster, it’s safe to assume that the Speed Force allows the Flash to have superhuman stamina to enable him to run extremely fast. In tandem with his speed must be incredible agility and reflexes, as his body and mind can adjust and adapt to various situations. However, what’s surprising is that the Flash can also use the Speed Force to amplify his strength and durability.
Building into the friction cushion, the Flash and his Speed Force aura have protective qualities. At its core, the Flash has a natural barrier against kinetic impact forces that could ordinarily crush others. Likewise, he can even amplify his own strength via kinetic energy from the Speed Force. This allows him to punch through walls and even Superman without so much as an injury.
7 Disrupt Other Dimensions, Forces
It’s already surprising enough that the Flash has a limited degree of elemental control, thanks in part to how the Speed Force affects the environment. For instance, the Flash can use the physical effects of superhuman speed to generate winds and cyclones, giving him some degree of aerokinesis. Likewise, the electrical currents from using the Speed Force give the Flash some form of electrokinesis, granting him the ability to conduct electricity, manipulate the electromagnetic spectrum, and even transform energy.

However, perhaps more surprising is how the Speed Force’s electricity can affect other dimensions and ability sources. For instance, the Flash can generate energies capable of destroying Green Lantern constructs, disrupt magic, and even other forces like the Microverse and the Green.
6 Speed Mind Cheats Accelerated Thinking
Interestingly enough, the superhuman speed and reflexes of the Flash don’t just reflect physically, but also mentally as well. Thanks to his Speed Force connection, the Flash can remove the need to analyze single pieces of information and instead have the superhuman ability to process multiple things at once - as demonstrated with him monitoring multiple people during a mission with Batman. In fact, the Flash can “move” his mind so fast that he has some resistance to mind control and other psychic attacks.
In addition, the Flash’s mind can “enter” the Speed Force mid-combat to get a tactical advantage in any conflict. Due to the Speed Force essentially representing time, the Flash can “view” multiple outcomes of situations based on different variables, allowing him to “select” an ideal result and act to achieve them. When used on a broader scale, this allows the Flash to view other timelines as well.
5 Self-Destruct And Self-Reassemble Via Vibrations
Thanks to his control over the Speed Force, the Flash can vibrate his molecular structure to varying degrees. Depending on the intensity, his vibrations can become so severe that things he touches can practically explode. Moreover, he can use these vibrations to conjure unique effects - such as adjusting his “frequency” to counter a possession by instead “imprisoning” a soul within his body’s vibrations.
Moreover, while the Flash is shown to use his vibrations to transfer into other universes, he can also use the same vibrations to instead escape inter-dimensional prisons. Perhaps more impressive is the Flash’s ability to vibrate himself so much that he practically “self-destructs” into a pile of molecules, only to use the same vibrations to reassemble himself.
4 Share, Steal The Speed Force
As a conduit of the Speed Force, the Flash can actually “share” the Speed Force’s gifts with others. For instance, the Flash can adjust his angular momentum and speed so that another person can receive accelerated speed. This is a specialty of Barry Allen, arguably the fastest Flash, and he’s been able to provide the likes of Wallace West “enhanced” speed by locking him into his velocity.

Likewise, the Flash can just as easily “steal” another speedster’s speed, provided he’s close enough to them. He’s done this to Reverse-Flash during his infection of the Negative Speed Force, where the Flash has stolen all of Reverse-Flash’s speed in physical contact.
3 Accelerate Time Itself
While it’s known that the Flash has the ability to time travel by running at just the right frequency, it seems the Speed Force can also help the Flash alter the very state of his environment. Through the Speed Force, the Flash can literally force time to move forward outside his own. Aside from seeing things in the future happen much faster in real-time, this has unique uses in combat.
For instance, Barry Allen was able to use this aspect of the Speed Force to counteract the ability of Zoom to slow down time. Essentially, by “speeding” time, he’s able to move normally when Zoom’s powers ordinarily slow him down. The Flash has been able to accelerate time for multiple people at once - at some point speeding time for everyone else on Earth except for the villain he is currently facing.
2 Recognize Events Pre-Reboots
One of the most infamous qualities of DC Comics is its penchant for reboots, courtesy of Crisis on Infinite Earths and the other Crises that happened afterward. In comics, it’s almost a written rule that almost all characters get reboots, with no recollection of previous events, to help fans ease into the superheroes. However, this rule doesn’t necessarily apply to all heroes, most especially with the Flash.
In DC Rebirth, Barry Allen has on multiple occasions demonstrated remembering events that shouldn’t have happened in the given timeline. For instance, he recalls the original Wally West, who has supposedly been “erased” as there’s also the New 52 Wally West who’s currently one of his sidekicks. Moreover, the Flash can recall his history with Eobard Thawne, Reverse-Flash, prior to the iconic Flashpoint.
1 Breaking The Fourth Wall
Given that the Flash has the ability to traverse and even look into timelines, it makes sense for the Flash to be able to theoretically travel into any timeline and reality he wishes. In fact, such was his ability to perceive timelines and realities that he has actually been able to break the Fourth Wall and acknowledge the presence of the audience, much like Deadpool.
However, whereas Deadpool does his Fourth Wall thing regularly, there’s only one instance of the Flash breaking the Fourth Wall, which happened in “The People vs. The Justice League, Part 5: Entropy” back in 2018.
